we certainly hope you're enjoying the lunch here at USM today and is it is a wonderful overflow crowd today also this is the largest gathering that I can remember at a stock market game awards ceremony so this is going to be fun this will be fun we'll get rolling as you're enjoying the rest your lunch I would like to invite up our guest speaker Gail from Hilo from the Morgan Stanley here locally she's financial advisor she has spoken before at our award ceremonies were lucky to have her today investors and all are hear the award is so exciting so my name is gay brunch alone financial advisor with Morgan Stanley here in Portland prior to joining Morgan Stanley I advised portfolio managers at Fidelity and mflc Wellington in the boston-based investment firms I invited by someone individual stock ideas so I would provide them with research and ideas on what stocks they should be buying and unusual finds iodized hedge funds and Austin's a really great 20 year history with a lot of experience investing in stock what I will tell you is it's not easy it's very very difficult I'm sure you found that along the way with your stocks giving up giving you the ups and downs and then December came along and whoa how'd you feel that I would love to ask you a few questions if somebody wants to raise raise your hand I'm curious to know what you guys think what are the main Market drivers of the Market's overall not on the individual ideas that you have but what is love Major Market drivers that would cause our markets to go up or down very good anyone else the other answers very good yes I'm sorry what Trump up in a tweet to what about you what a bear Market what drives the band Market there's so many things that drive our markets it's not about individual earnings and revenue growth and things like that we have the Federal Reserve with the in straight environment we have oil believe it or not the price of oil drives our Market significantly like Wax right here from Port driving around there a lot of vehicles in the price of oil goes up what happens to their arm is there any could be impacted by that boy was a major driver oil also drives are consumer spending habits how did we feel when the price of oil went up recently that really drive the market so I haven't hand up for you I'm just looking at the the bull market that we've been in on the market from 1980 to today and we talked about the full market so we talked about their markets where are we today as a firm Morgan Stanley believes will in the mix purpose of an event secular bull market but we have a cyclical bear Market what does that mean we have the return to volatility stocks have been up and down 2017 he was up up and away in 2018 everything and let me know how things change now we have still a lot of volatility in this market so I would beware and be cautious of your individual stock ideas the next page on page three what else drives the market emotions are a big part of what and greed in what drives the market anxiety and depression also can drive the market people in 08 and 09 when the market turned around people were so down and out and what did they do especially those question they sold out at the absolute worst time because their emotions took over and they sold out at the worst time trying to page for I always like this chart because in 2010 2017 all we saw was with Fang stocks in the S&P 500 in this very narrow group of stocks that drove the market up up and away and everybody wanted to compare their performance the S&P 500 was big big star well they forget that the S&P from 2000 to 2010 was down 9% people forget those stats and they need to think about that think about the overall investment idea overall that's my portfolio diversification page five can anyone tell me what you really want to offer their ideas on a mutual fund versus ETF and active investor versus a passive and vehicle licensing just quickly when we think about index funds or ETFs it's a basket of stocks and their set and they're not traded versus a mutual fund that people parents will have the 401K that you might have in your 529 a mutual fund does what you all did and they invest in stocks they have an active portfolio where they have a basket of stocks that buying and selling stocks song their believe so what the market will do any questions about mutual funds or ETFs so when we think about you know stocks individual individually does anyone have any questions about maybe if you want to throw up one of your stock ideas that you have and in something that happened and maybe I can help you understand what nothing without sock question you don't but I think in your stock selection maybe over the past few probably did a lot of research right and that is the key to investing if you don't do the research and you just buy it because it's going up or down that's called speculating right because it's going up and you just chasing if you don't know why you're buying it so when you think about individual stock ideas you really want to do your research and find out what industry there in find out what the drivers of the industry are what drives their market and will they show some outside and that's investing that's doing your research and thinking about the big picture for individual stocks in with the beauty of index are you kid this actually is that think about what you've learned about the world about the economy about tariffs about interest rates in about oil I think that's the best part of teaching my clients about their investment floss chicken ideas and let letting my clients come to me with a stock ID and say can I buy XYZ because they are putting putting their own money into the game but they're also doing their own research and their understanding what drives those stocks and that we get to learn so much about the world in about our economy my last life for you is on page 10 and I will say to you kids and everyone really that diversification is really really key to a successful portfolio I have seen so many clients coming to me with an overweight position owning too much of one stock in a portfolio clients wanting to buy test clients wanting to buy Bitcoin clients wanting to keep and maintain their ownership on GE stocks go up and down and buy it by having too much of anyone stop you are the saying about you are except to a lot of a lot more volatility in your portfolio so diversification is key think about several different stocks several areas of the market and be true to yourself in your own philosophy and be patient because the market as we know is goes up and down over the blind turn butts all over the long-term I think the performance will be good to those who are patience and do we have any more
