A group of local veterans visited with 8th graders at JSMS in November 2018. They presented and answered questions relating to service, freedom, citizenship and constitutional protections.

Naval Academy the Air Force Academy and the Military Academy West Point who wrote these things before Christ was born to give you an idea of how long ago that was so I'm going to plan for song 10 steals in each of us sense of patriotism that's why I called patriotic music so we're going to talk about that more in a little while so we're going to talk about 3 different things today the first one is the cost of the freedoms Frank kid that implicit in the word something is not free like your BMW convertible is not free and you gotta pay something together so Freedom has a cost what do you 1.5 years in that house in five years so your chances as a 12 13 14 year old of escaping some sort of conflict before your 65 years old however many years old you want to be when you retire I'm very good there's got to be something happened during that time because statistically what happens to us now Protectors of Freedom which gives us freedom is not free other metrics the six up here alright consider my brother so they time between the time when they were born when their mom gave birth to them and and sometimes between the day that they actually got off of active duty they total themselves I am willing die for my country are you stupid the one minute that I said they paid the ultimate price they said that to nobody goes to war for the possibility that you might not because that's what war is it's going to happen Okay so is the next segment of what we want to talk about what makes you think you have the right to Freedom who's going to answer for that I got an answer so if you want you can come you can't give me a wrong answer yes sir free I like that I didn't hear all of it by light I like what I like what I did hear okay so the thing that gives you the right it's called the Constitution of the United States in the Constitution of the United Bellingham Washington you know may not look like it on TV sometimes down there in Washington or three distinct branches of your Government judicial legislative and executive equal I don't interact with each other and it's a store Tatum way they're cold equal show in the constant in the Constitution also in the Constitution there something called the bill of I have studied that until you getting into a high school but the Bill of Rights is just what it sound like they're there right so the thing that gives you the right is called the Bill of Rights found in the Constitution the whole world can give me some examples of what some of your rights are the right the awesome the environment what is a right to guaranteed q2u in writing in the Bill of Rights part of the Constitution have the right not to have States military come in and occupy your home that that probably hopefully will never happen because that means we're fighting inside the kind now limits of the United States does that we don't want that never ever happen but if it does happen you're guaranteed that a bunch of Marines are going to come and knock on your door and say okay we're taking over eating all your your marinara sauce and spaghetti and I'm going to stay here for for two months or whatever it is that's in the Constitution you also have in the Constitution the right to due process and in the paper within the last two days there was an example of a Young Man I'm leaving Portland who have been held incarcerated in Portland sure but for our area so his deputies had arrested this young man and he was in class but wasn't reported due process you have the right to an attorney you have the right to have your case heard in a reasonable amount of time except under the law where they talking about terrorist the Guantanamo Bay thing instead things like that that that terrorists apprehended is going to Guantanamo Bay or somewhat detention place inside United States and and they can stay there for months and you'll be no attorney 99.999% of the time that individual or individuals would not be US citizens you are probably all US citizen I asked you don't have to be US citizen to be sitting here okay so we talked about your right now let's talk about the patriotism part of little bit Patriots shut up you think Tom Brady and the New England Patriots are the ones who leave their home the children there male and female that leave their spouse and then go to some forsaken place over in Afghanistan and Pakistan or somewhere where we don't even know operating an end it will stay there until they told that they're they're going to come back home there's an excellent excellent book I talked about I am Malala two years ago I won't do you still teach I won't talk about Malala a lot well I don't know who the Pakistani girl young Young's girl like you she was actually your age when this occur in Pakistan or dad was three different schools the boys only in Pakistan Asian hasn't changed a great deal girls were not allowed to go to school girls did not need an education so they weren't allowed but Malala we got on the school it's the sneak into the back of building and she would listen so she taught herself how to read and she taught herself a lot of other things about what she learned in the class band say contest traditionally the principles they don't call him that they're like headmaster's in each of the different districts like rsu14 and then somebody over the competition and the boys would write an essay and then they all go somewhere out there for us and then we get judged she wrote an essay but you didn't put her first name. She only put an initial Tony didn't know they would get along with a girl they thought it was one of the boys from one of her dad's school so she won the essay contest and then she presented herself to receive the award I caused a tremendous problem shortly thereafter she was insisting she was going to go to school she was in a truck that looks like a back around here with canvas top on it send it with boys and he was going to school and Taliban tank that was that was at that time the enemy that we're more worried about how late is still here the Taliban change and then I got the candles and England and the King of England that back when they had nights I'm horses and they had Lansing sores and taking things like that to us every night so William Wallace decided that they should be free he was a patriot so he organized stop people from going out and stop Scotland the intestines Scotland fighting against the king's men for their freedom but had to add a one battle and by the King's Men and he was assassinated they try to kill Malala they try to kill William Wallace so I was in 1239 and 90 try to see what the 1997 is anybody here related to John spring phone number and he lives in the area okay John was a fourth grade student Manchester school I took a team of veterans in there in 1997 and when we talk about something so we talk about something similar to this John was sitting out there to 10 year old boy in that class in 1997 when he graduated from high school John join the Marine Corps Rose to the rank of Sergeant at to deploy text to Afghanistan show first two deployments you got one purple heart and two bronze Stars his one purple heart and one bronze star can bring one battle when it's Manheim overrun his Marine Corps position and dreams have been wounded and John went and drag them into a safe area so they couldn't be shot by the Taliban is it going to cost for Freedom by Taliban fire that he man to machine gun don't fight off the Taliban and for that he got that reward and sense gotten out of the Marine Corps and I'm pretty sure he's at living in the Wyndham area are we saw his picture 10 Manchester School up on the up on the bulletin board for admissions office class just two years ago I think in his dress blues with his big purple heart is to buy stars are and he had a relative in the school I hate the big difference and William Wallace drafted in so when I was in my junior year my history teacher was a CD and ABC me I always wanted to be a builder I was thinking that that cost in high school so I got my mother and father's permission and I joined when I was a junior that's what I started my military time and once I graduated I want to act you and the bike was deployed in Washington DC then went to what Guam then I was watching it but if you picked out of the $500 35 is what over the side pain and we were the first ones on Saipan after the second World War II clean it up and and clear party Acres of jungle and we because we'd go almost bite to the hour of how much active duty we had to buy my total time County Marine Corps reservist / 29 years but active service at my full-time job everyday was 22 years 5 Kenny always Bay in Hawaii and they were in Vietnam when I took command of of them now going into a yd of my $200 so Marines if you had two casualties they were gone and you didn't get a replacement
